Lines That Guide Traffic and Meet the Rules
Parking lot striping wears out in a few years in Middle Georgia sun; HomeGuide says lines usually last two to five years. Faded lines mean crooked parking, lost spaces and confused traffic, and in a city with shift changes at the base and busy retail corridors, that adds up. Restriping is one of the cheapest ways to make a lot work better.
Restriping triggers ADA requirements
Department of Justice guidance says restriping a lot triggers the 2010 ADA Standards. That means accessible parking must meet current requirements when lines are repainted:
- 1 accessible space for 1 to 25 total, 2 for 26 to 50, 3 for 51 to 75, 4 for 76 to 100
- At least one van-accessible space; one in six in larger lots
- Car spaces at least 96 inches wide with a 60-inch aisle
- Van spaces 132 inches with a 60-inch aisle, or 96 with a 96-inch aisle
- Signs with the bottom at least 60 inches above the ground
- Slopes no steeper than 1:48
Spaces are counted per lot, and accessible stalls go closest to an accessible entrance on level ground.
New layouts
After a rebuild, overlay or sealcoat, the lot can be laid out fresh to improve flow or add stalls. HomeGuide says a new layout costs 20 to 50 percent more than restriping.
Markings
- Stalls, standard and compact
- Accessible stalls and symbols
- Arrows, stop bars and lane lines
- Crosswalks, fire lanes and loading zones
- Curb paint and stencils
Signs and wheel stops
Accessible stalls need identification signs with the International Symbol of Accessibility, with van-accessible signs where required. Where an accessible route runs in front of stalls, wheel stops keep parked cars from narrowing it below 36 inches. We note missing signs and stops.
Pairing with sealcoat
Lines show best on a dark, uniform surface. Many owners seal and stripe in one project: the lot is sealed in sections, and the lines go down once the sealer cures.
Counting spaces correctly
The ADA count is per parking lot or structure, not per property. A church with a front lot and a back lot counts each one separately. We count each lot on site and lay out the accessible stalls for each.
Scheduling
Paint needs a clean, dry surface. We stripe early, late or on weekends where it helps, and close sections until the paint dries.

4. Paint
Lines and stencils painted; sections reopened when dry.

Parking Lot Striping Questions
How often should we restripe?
Every two to five years.
Do we have to update accessible spaces?
Yes; restriping triggers the 2010 ADA Standards.
Can you stripe after hours?
Often, yes.
Can you add spaces?
Sometimes, by adjusting the layout within fire lane and accessibility limits.
Should we seal before striping?
If the surface is faded, yes. Fresh lines stand out much better on a sealed surface.
