A City That Grew Up Fast, and Its Pavement
Asphalt paving in Warner Robins deals with housing from every decade since the 1940s. In 1940, the farming community of Wellston had about 50 residents. The air depot opened in 1942, the town was renamed Warner Robins that September, and the population reached 7,986 by 1950, 33,491 by 1970 and 80,308 by 2020. Driveways from the early decades are now old enough that their bases have given out, while subdivisions built in the last twenty years have pavement that is still young. Each needs a different approach.
Older driveways: look under the surface
A driveway poured or paved decades ago was often laid on a thin base, and years of rain, roots and traffic have weakened it further. Signs that the base is gone include alligator cracking, ruts, low spots that pond, and edges breaking into the yard. Paving over that kind of driveway gives it a new look for a year or two before the old cracks come back through. In those cases we remove the old surface, rebuild the base and pave. Where the base is still firm, an overlay can work and costs less.
Newer driveways: keep water out
In newer subdivisions, the job is protection. Crack filling and sealcoating every few years slow the sun damage and water intrusion that shorten a driveway's life. Where fill near a garage has settled, we cut out and rebuild just that area.
Climate and soil
Warner Robins sits at about 305 feet on the Coastal Plain, south of the Fall Line that runs through Macon. Average July highs are about 92 degrees, the record is 108, and the area gets about 46 inches of precipitation a year, with July the wettest month. Coastal Plain soils, like the Tifton series common in south and middle Georgia, are typically sandy on top with denser, clayey layers below. They carry pavement well when compacted, but they need a solid aggregate base and slopes that move summer storm water off quickly. HomeGuide lists a typical residential section as 2 to 3 inches of asphalt over 6 to 8 inches of base, and 3 to 4 inches over 8 to 10 inches for heavier vehicles.
Pipes, ditches and permits
Many Houston County driveways cross a roadside ditch on a pipe. On county roads, Houston County's driveway regulations require a permit for work in the right-of-way, including widening, relocating or paving an existing residential driveway. The county sets the pipe type, diameter and length at its first site inspection, inspects the pipe before it is covered, and requires the driveway to slope down and away from the road. Inside the City of Warner Robins, we check the city's current requirements. On state routes such as US 129, US 41 and SR 96, GDOT issues the permit.

Common Questions
How much does an asphalt driveway cost in Warner Robins?
National guides list new asphalt driveways at about $5 to $12 or more per square foot (HomeGuide) and $7 to $15 (Angi). A 600-square-foot driveway is about $3,000 to $7,200 in HomeGuide figures. Removal, base repair and pipe work add to it. We give you a written price after the visit.
Can you pave over my old driveway?
If the base is still firm, an overlay can work and costs less. If the driveway is rutted, alligator-cracked or breaking at the edges, the base has failed and an overlay will crack again. We check before recommending either.
Do I need a permit for driveway work in Houston County?
On county roads, Houston County requires a permit for any work in the right-of-way, including widening, relocating or paving an existing driveway; its listed non-commercial permit fee is $50. City streets and state highways have their own processes. We confirm for your address.
Who decides what size driveway pipe I need?
On Houston County roads, the county determines the pipe type, diameter and length at its initial site inspection, and inspects the pipe before it is covered.
How soon can I drive on new asphalt?
Usually after a few days, longer in summer heat. We give you specific timing.
When should I sealcoat?
Three to six months after paving, then every few years.
We are PCS-ing soon. Can you do the work before we leave?
Often. Tell us your date and we will tell you what is realistic, and which repairs give the most value before a sale or rental.
