Paving in Bonaire

Asphalt paving in Bonaire usually means Houston County rules. Bonaire grew up around the Georgia Southern and Florida Railway, which arrived in 1888; its post office was registered on December 3 of that year. The Georgia General Assembly incorporated the town in 1912, but its charter was dissolved in 1995, so Bonaire is now an unincorporated community about 6 miles south of central Warner Robins on US 129. As of 2021, State Route 96 bypasses it, connecting US 129 to I-75.

County driveway regulations

Because Bonaire is unincorporated, driveways on county roads fall under Houston County's Regulations for Access Management and Encroachment Control. A permit is required before any work in the county right-of-way, and that includes widening, relocating or paving an existing residential driveway. The listed non-commercial permit fee is $50. The county sets the pipe type, diameter and length at its first site inspection (minimum length 30 feet), inspects the pipe before it is covered, and requires the driveway to slope down and away from the road edge at 2 to 6.25 percent. The section from the pavement edge to the right-of-way must be paved or have a 2-inch stone surface. We handle the permit process as part of the job.

Storm recovery

On April 5, 2022, a high-end EF3 tornado heavily damaged Bonaire. Rebuilding brought heavy equipment and debris hauling over driveways, and some of that damage is still showing up as cracks and sunken areas. We repair or replace damaged pavement and check the pipe and base underneath.

Locates

We request Georgia 811 locates before digging, and ask about private wells and septic on larger lots.

Timing

The county inspector has up to three business days for the initial site visit after a permit application, so we build that into the schedule.

Larger lots

Many Bonaire homes sit on larger lots with longer driveways and roadside ditches. We plan the base, crown and edges for the full length and make sure the pipe at the road is sized and set correctly.
